Insemination with frozen semen

A very interesting article by Anita and Hans Lindquist (Tempeluddens Kennel)

With our small breed, we sometimes need to use insemination to continue breeding with good quality. The most effective is to inseminate directly in the uterus with fresh, cold or frozen semen.

In many parts of the world, insemination is still performed surgically under anaesthesia. That’s why it is not practically possible to repeat it a second day as with a normal mating.

In Scandinavia, we are not allowed to inseminate with surgical methods. For many years, an aproved veterinarian can use the "Scandinavian probe" for a completely blood-free and for the bitch completely painless insemination directly into the uterus.

In 2018, our Tempeluddens Verona was inseminated with frozen semen from the USA, in Oslo. It was the inventor of this probe, Dr. Ragnar Thomasen (EBVS® European Veterinary Specialist in Animal Reproduction, Oslo/Norway), who performed it. Vera was completely unaffected by the treatment. Neither sedatives nor anything else is needed. We repeated the treatment the next day. After 60 days she gave birth to 7 puppies. Two years later she was mated in a natural way twice with proper hangings and after 62 days she got 7 new puppies. So the insemination gave thus the same result as a normal mating without risky surgery.

I am sure that this "Scandinavian probe" is used in many places in Europe, but we must spread it all over the world so that our females can be saved from unnecessary suffering.

International Breeding Regulations of the FCI (ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION point 13)
